.54 cal or real close to that, I'm glad ya got your baby home . When Two Moons had er apart, did he give ya the caliber. Is it definitely a .54 ?? I'm gonna have to tinker some with my Hatfield before I come out in Dec. I'm having trouble generating enough spark. It may be my flints. But I'm not rulin out the frizzen, or lock spring. We'll see. Anyway, lookin forward to seein the snap-shots.

Was mostly interested in if would find it shootable or not so as far as I know when I first mesured the bore that was the only time and that was just a little larger than .54 but I thought the end maybe opend up for easyer loading patch & bal and I did ask T/M if it was and he said yes!! so I'm shure that it is. The pin hole I menchend was emty, it is for the front sling strap and T/M had an origanal, that will be on the pictures too as for the sling hole in the stock he was able to fill that hole allso..smiles The gun still need some work but for now it is back home and I can start working on freshning the barrel, the good news is all the rifleing is good & deep with no big holes. But it was well rusted so is ruff but this can be taken care of. T/M's called it a German Hawken, a Shootzen, a a yeager- Shootzen as he says the sights are for both hunting & target. He did give the bore a couple of acid treatments so the bore is now pretty darn clean and ready to fresh.

We took the gun apart this weekend and it looks like it will be a shooter. I will have to get aspecial nipple for the gun and the barrel will take some scrubbing, but it will shoot! I do have some photo's and will e mail them to Bill for posting. It is amazing when you can tear apart a gun that is 150 years old and it is still shiney on the interitor. The breech plug threads looked like they were cut yesterday. The gun is proofed with a crown over a W hick would lead me to believe that it was made during the reign of William I, this would place it at about 1860.

I have a ? for anyone that may have an educated opinion on this, This gun has a- B over a crown then a W, I was just looking in a book listing Proofmarks and it shows a - Crown over a B as a gun that was Imported which passed proof test. Now my thought & ? is with the over the [crown] could that mean it was Exported? If so I bet it did go to St. Louis Mo. and comepeated with S. Hawken & others. something else I for got to say the gun weighs 8 lbs. At any rate I'm as happy to have it as I would be to own a real S. Hawken allso!!

I asked bill about this and he and I agree but don't know for shure that we are right? the Jeager under the barrel on the stock is stamped V llll Does anyone feel they know what this means? I had 3 posibilities with leaning hardest to being 1854? or 9, or 1859?
