Although I've hunted for many years I'm new to muzzle loading. So far my favorite is my little CVA .50 caliber carbine shooting a .495 PRB and 80 gr of fffG. It shoots accurately, kicks lightly even though the load will shoot a RB through and through one of our little CA blacktail deer at 75 yards. A light 25 gr. load of ffG is good for rabbit, squirrel and tin cans at 25 yards with no change in the sight picture. That was a piece of luck!
I've also got a CVA 12 gauge single barrel that measures .720 at the muzzle. It's a real clay bird buster with #5 shot and hand thrown clays. It will handle a .690 ball and hits a paper plate at that 75 yards. That's proved to be my best distance when I balance my eyes, the sights, my age and the limits of shooting entry-level guns.

I have dropped my load down about 20 grains on my .58 cal. Its still probably running in the same volocity as Bounces but it dosen't hurt me anymore when I pull the trigger. I use to shoot rifle matches with it but I kept getting headaches when I did. Then one day one of the club memebers took pictures of me shooting it and I seen the reason for the headaches. Whiplash. My head flew forward my head flew back and then it kind of rocked back and forth until it stopped. Well I finally got tired of the headaches and started dropping down the load till it was comfortable to shoot. I'm still shooting heavier loads than most people would even think of but man that gun can shoot and its actually a very comfortable rifle to shoot now. It will still pick up a deer and carry it about 5' sideways when I shoot it though. Totally awsome.

My ex wife lives in AZ. but bought a farm near me for are daughter to live on. ?? no can't explane it but looking forward to takeing a deer off of her place...smiles... It is a farm of 160 acers that 60 or so have steep deep valleys & heavy with trees with a spring creek in the bottom. I'm thinking if December is cold this is going to fill up with deer by muzzelloading seasion. Daughter says that with the cold weather we have just had she is seeing more and I should beable to shoot one off her porch if I wanted too or from the cattle shed door that may be the best spot!!! Say's they have ben comeing down the hills and down the valley bye the creek going south past the house & buildings at daylight every morning. Yah!!! I'm geting excited!!! Oh yah nice racks have ben seen allso!!!

I will not try to compete with you custom stuffer guys... but I am a .54 guy. I shoot inline Knight rifles. I use it because I figure it to be my best option in Indiana. I am not a shotgun slug fan at all.
I was shooting 600 grain semi-spitzer solids for a while, on top of 120 grains of FF triple 7 powder. That load would rattle your melon, especially through the Knight rifles with the lighter stocks. In my heavier stocked gun it was not TERRIBLE, but it was uncomfortable on the bench.
A few years ago I shot a buck at about 70 yards that was facing me but had his head turned to my left a little. I hit him in the neck and the bullet ran straight down his spine for a total of a 30" wound track. It broke 8 vertabrae while doing so, and didn't exit. When I pulled the trigger... like Bill says... it threw him about 6 or 7 feet backwards... while flipping him in a cartwheel at the same time. It was awesome.
I no longer shoot that bullet, I have switched to qa 450 grain flat nose swaged, soft lead bullet in a sabot. It's been great. I killed one at 140 yards last year for my longest shot ever, and I threaded a shot yesterday through a opening in the brush of about 8" in diameter to hit my bigger doe right where I wanted to.
I don's shoot for competition... I shoot to kill deer. That's it.

I forgot. I am down to 80 grain loads with 209 primers. That load is great out to at least 140 yards on whitetails.

a Much better load than most 45-70 jabba , so it should work well that far and if you know the drop at 200 would still take deer.
