Having owned an older vx1 in the past, I decided to buy a new one. I am absolutely shocked and appalled at the quality of the Leupold VX-1 I received in the mail this evening. This is going straight back to SWFA as a 30 dollar tasco is better quality!
Glass clarity is fine and exterior finish is fine. First impressions of the adjustment knobs were they were cheap looking and further inspection shows they are horrific. Very gritty and the clicks do not feel positive at all.
This is unacceptable from Leupold. I don't care that it's their entry level scope, it's $220 which is not cheap.
I would recommend you don't waste your time and money with the VX1

Call my friend Allen and look at the vortex lineup. Www.aaoptics.comThey have the best glass per dollar around now. Full lifetime transferable warranty. Just matte finish no gloss no silver ECT. Allen will set you up. I now have the monocular and a crossfire 6-18 and diamondback 2-7 rim fire.

As an update, I'm planning on buying a Leupold VX-3 in a 2.5-8x36.
Thanks for the info though. I hear good things about Vortex. There are definitely a lot of smaller brands out there than a few years ago, many in the 300-600 price range which in theory should be high quality. A lot of the companies are specifically making AR scopes though which isn't going to help me out.

I've never owned or shot with a Leupold scope. I have always favored Bushnell scopes and have had excellent luck with them over the years. Their optics are about as clear and sharp as any other scopes I have tried at the gunshops. Just a thought.

I am a fan of the Bushnell Elite and Legend. However, the only gloss scope available with them is a 3-9x40. I lined up my other Elite 3-9x40 with my new rifle and felt it was just a little too big of a scope.
I am told the 36mm is slightly but noticeably smaller and should fit well on a lever gun. I am not a fan of Leupold's duplex. They are not near as wide as everyone else's, but I will get used to it.
I have a special order inquiry in with Cabelas right now so I'll see what price they come up with. I have $350 worth of points with them, but I'm not going to vastly overpay for this. If it comes in under $425, I'll get it from them.

Leupold makes some wonderful scopes, and I've owned several over the years. I must say, though, I never liked their lowest end scopes, like the VX-1.
