I expect grief from Jimh, but this problem can occur anytime you swap stocks.
I bought a synthetic stock for my marlin 917v 17hmr. The stock is for the new Marlin XT's but inletting wise, it fits fine. One of the stock screws is a smidge too long, the other a smidge too short. My thought is it's easiest to just buy a longer screw for the one and a couple washers.
Do you foresee any problems with putting washers (probably plastic) on the outside of the stock? I don't think it would be a problem

Check and make sure you don't have the screws reversed.

For some reason a 15cent washer seems easier than cutting the screw... Everything is done now. The stock shaved a little over a pound off. So might get another scope which should probably drop the weight another 1/2 pound. Rimfires shouldn't weigh 8 1/2 pounds

I was going to ignore it but Ijust can't... Why not just shorten the screw? Why do a Bubba job when doing it right will only take a few seconds longer. Heck, mail me the screw and tell me how much shorter you want it and i will do it for you for free.

Sorry, I forgot about this thread
Thank you for the offer. As I got looking at the problem, I realized the screw was not too long. It's just that the stock is flat and not countersinked.
Though this reminds me, I have a 1851 navy I bought last year that doesn't have a sight on it. I need to get that taken of! Let me dig that thing out. I remember something else was wrong with it too. I'll pm ya in the next day or so

They are NEVER too long, just remember to call a Doctor after 4 hours. If you had sent it when you posted you would have it back already.
