I just picked up a tag for the first time in years
I had some vacation to use so I'm turkey hunting and camping sunday and monday. Hopefully I'll find a place to go deer hunting should I feel up to it in a couple weeks.
Anyone turkey hunting?

Well that was very interesting! 2 very standard happenings for Fall hunting. Sunday, I'm walking out this ditch and a half dozen birds took off running but I couldn't shoot. I gave it some time and made my way in their direction. I heard a couple clucks about 50 yards away just out of sight so I quickly stood by a big tree and gave a couple clucks and keys. Not a minute later, I had them in my lap. I forgot in the Fall you can shoot 2 right in a row, so as soon as I shot I took off running like ya do in the spring But that's ok ;D ;D ;D Sunday, I was walking a corn field and about a dozen birds got up and flew. Unfortunatly they were too far to shoot so I just followed them. As I crested the hill, one of the birds flew up about 40 yards and gave me a decent head shot. He fell like a sack of potatoes - never saw anything like that ;D Both birds were about maybe 15-18 pounds with 6" beards.

Ha, DD ;D why do you run after shooting BTW? I'm not following that part. A lot of people don't, but I was always taught to run up there and break their neck before they get away.

I've been given the same advice, and I try to get to the turkey quickly, too. If a pellet grazes a turkey's skull, it will knock him down and stun him, and he'll flop around on the ground for a minute- then get up and run away. So I'm told.

wouldn't it just be easier to sit there and if it got back up just shoot it again?

Jim, if he gets up and runs, it'll be straight away from you, with his head down. All you'll have is a Texas heart shot- not a good shot to take with a shotgun.

Jim, if he gets up and runs, it'll be straight away from you, with his head down. Not to mention if the pattern density or pellet energy was an issue causing a crippled bird, you're probably talking 35-50 yards unless something blocked part of the shot. So then you have a crippled bird jump up and you're almost out of range. Even if you can close the distance in half before he jumps up, you have a better chance. I have to say, get there more safely than what I would. I make like a grizzlybear is after me. Easy to to trip and fall. At a bare minimum, make darn sure that safety is on. As far as when you get up to him - grab him by the head and start spinning and jerking with his body weight still on the ground a half dozen times till you feel like his neck is full of loose gravel. If his legs start to kick up, you better let go unless you want that spur in your arm
