Any Mountie is better than most other 22's. They were a top notch all steel gun and accurate to boot. My BIL has a matched set of 22 and 44 mags in the Mountie carbine versions, he doesn't shoot them he just polishes them.

The Marlins from 1970-1980's Pre safety are the best of the bunch IMHO. The fit and finish are supurb. The mounties or 39M's are the handiest of the the bunch to use in the field and will generally outshoot dollar per dollar anything in there price class. I prefer the straight stock over the pistol grip on levers even though i don't find the pistol grip unhandy. I have rather small hands so the straight grip lets me work the lever better. Are you going to scope it? or are you going to use a peep...... If a peep is in your future check out the black gold 39 peep from skinner sights. www.skinnersights.com/2.htmlMy 1982 with black trigger (1982 and 1983) my 1858 true mountie (In collectors terms) Sell off that henry to red it won't be heading to the field anytime soon.

Sorry about the fine pictures of my toes....
The only difference really is the square lever of the 39m and the extra wood removed in the butstock. (The later do i am sure to save cost. ) Oh and the 39m has the sling studs and the old mountie has the sling rings.

I believe the forearm pieces are ever so slightly different too. the 1978 on up uses the same forearm as the 39A I'm told. the older Mountys used a slightly slimmer forearm. I read they went to the same forearm to save the cost of having to have to different model forearms in stock. Yes Red we still have the Henry. it is the youth model but I bought another full size stock set for it some time back so the kids can shoot it for a long long time. that way they keep their sticky fingers off the Marlin!

The older true (To some) mountie does have the perch belly forearm. It is not nearly as drastic as the same period 336 sc in 35 rem. Kind of a pic on the perch belly on the 336. I prefer the 39m of the two i have to shoot.

PS on the old mountie the barrel is larger than on the 39m also. Most likely another money saving and weight saving feature.

I do think though that the aperture site is more than likely in the near future if I have my way.

The good news:
After I got my model 39a I started looking very hard for the mounties. I found the old one first. I got it for 225 with a leather scabbard at a local pawn shop They very seldom have anything but near new prices for the guns but I don't think they had this one correct ID'd. So it was a deal. The newer mountie i got from my local gun pusher Mike. He called me when he bought it and said I could have a near mint 39m for 310 plus tax. So I have about 535 in the pair.
Now the BAD News.
Last winter I went to a weekend gun show on sunday. I pasted about 5 model 39a's and one 1897 and look but they were all priced at about 390-400. I walked right past and saw dad at the end of the ISLE.
Dad saiid "Whats the weird 39'a with the straight grip and long barrel called? There one you just passed." I went back and dad pointed it out. Sure enough a "K" prefix 24 inch mountie first year producetion at 390. I did my best to walk away without picking it up yet other than a quick glance to check condition without hands looked good.
I walked to the end of the isle got out the company blackberry checked that "K" was the first year 24 inch mountie walked back picked it up and looked it over good about 80% NRA . I asked if he could go any further down on price. as soon as he put some money in his cash box and he said that a dealer (steeler) just bought it. Right out of my hands no less while I was fondleing it and getting ready to make it mine even at 390. They only made 7,534 of them that year.
The one gun show find I really wanted at a good price.

well it's not a safe queen but it's not a pile of rusted bolts either. it is missing the plastic bullseye in the bottom of the stock and it has a scope rail mounted to the top that I think I will remove and keep this one an open site rifle. however now I need to find the filler screws for the top of the receiver but that shouldn't be too hard to find.

I know they sell the bullseye, but I'm not sure how easy it is to install...not that it makes a huge difference. I liked that model in the early 2000's they called the Texan (I think). Had a little more western look compared to the 39, but not as much as a Henry. Would have collectors value I would think. I need to do something with the $170 in Cableas points, $30 Cabelas gift card, and $30 Visa Gift Card. Thinking a Henry since I have the brass receiver cover But not ruling out a good semi-auto shotgun, which is what I really "need"
