I was in Omaha last week and ended up buying a 270 from a friend od Dad's. His Dad bought the gun after WWll in a little shop in Southgate California, from a fellow called Roy. The gun is a FN Mauser action dated 1948 in the moust G/A inlaid california ugly stock you ever did see. Yep it's a very early Weatherby, in 270 Winchester... before Roy started the magnums. Curt is dying to get his hands on it and I am holding out for something decent but in the meantime I am going to load up some rounds and shoot it. According to the owner it has shot a couple boxes of shells in the past 50 years. I'd post a picture but the ugly roll over dished cheek piece and inlays might break my camera.

Twomoons, that rifle might be worth a good chunk of $$'s. Anything Weatherby has a following, and a Weatherby made rifle that's not a Weatherby magnum cartridge I suspect is unusual.

Actually when Weatherby started in like 1946 you could get any caliber and he would build it on any action appropriate for the caliber. In about 1947 or so he started using FN actions from FI in Washington DC (Times have sure changed) The FN guns were offered in standard calibers and then in the Weatherby calibers as they were introduced but the FN actions were not long enough for the magnums and when lengthened they were not stout enough so he went to Brevex if I remember right. Then in about 1956 he had the Weatherby action made. Tere was always a second line of guns offered in standard calibers like the Vangaurd today and makers varied through the years. Anyway the camera didn't break so here it is... The off side has a big ebony and ivory diamond design in the stock too. The cheek piece is semi roll over with a scooped out cheek like the old schutzen rifles. Compared to a classic Griffin and Howe or Sedgley this is BUTT UGLY. Attachments:

Forgot to mention that the scope is a K4 Weaver with a DOT reticule.

so what is a collector like than one worth? and i wouldn't say it is butt ugly, unless the picture just doesn't give the real feel for it.

No it slops over to the other side some too, it's just pointy on the left side. I don't have a value on it yet I am trying to go through Weatherby and see if I can authenticate it. I got it pretty cheap under $400.

I don't see anything wrong with the looks of that gun except maybe the cheekpiece sort of reminds me of an old sway-back mare. That's certainly a nice piece of wood. I've seen (IMHO) a lot uglier stuff posted on this board that everybody seemed to slobber over. Oh well, whatever floats your boat.

I think it's the only pretty weatherby I've seen, as it's in a nice shootable cal. What weatherby is known for is ugly. lol.

Those Wby's with the Mauser actions are not near as collectible as the later German guns. Usually they sell for around $699 to $899 depending on condition but with a dished out cheek piece which is incorrect its probably on the lower end. Besides, as the Weatherby collectors say, its not a Weatherby unless its a Weatherby caliber. Now the Ruger #1's I have seen those selling in the $799 to $899 bracket for the walnut stocked guns and some higher yet.
