I got to looking at a batch of powder I was given and I have 4 cans plumb full of Norma 205 rifle powder. I have never used any Norma powder and now 205 is no more. If anyone has any data on 205 in 30-06 I would like any info. I see in the charts it's slower than 4831 so I would assume it would be best with 180 or so pills. Just guessing I'd say start at about 56-7 grains and work up to a case full?

No data here either. Sounds about right though.

Twomoons, I can't find any data for Norma 205. N 205 was replaced in their line by MRP, as I'm sure you know. I do have an idea for you, though. Norma made powder for Alliant- and still may, for all I know. There are a lot of people that think Norma 205 and Reloder 22 are the same powder. I'm not totally sure of that, but, the burning rate is about the same for both, so, Reloder 22 data, approached conservatively, would be a good starting point for working up loads. What really surprises me is how the heck you got 4 cans of Norma powder! Norma makes good powder, but their distribution in the US was not very good back when 205 was made.

www.reloadbench.com/burn.htmlGive that link a look at. It shows N205 to be just a bit faster than H4831 and slower than IMR 4831 so it should not be hard to come up with a load for it. Just start low and watch for pressure signs and back off when you get them. Actually I think you can use the old IMR 4831 loadings and do very well with it.

Yea I still have the 4831 loads I used in that 270 I sold your dad in the 80's. I seem to remember you bending your nose with that one. I figured to start with a 140 gr bullet at about 55 grains and go from there. I was looking at my note book last night and went back to 1972 with 270 loads. That was my father in laws favorite and we tried every powder made up till about 1985. When he died Greg MWBIL got the gun and I got the Beest of Jack O'Connor. Dad always said that a 22" barrel was no good on a 270 and that 24" was the way to go. Last night I was reading Pet LOads on the 270 and they said the same thing the 2" barrel loss drops over 100 fps from the velocity. But since I don't hot rod em any more I don't suppose it makes a lot of difference.

By load and velocity it's running just the same as IMR 4831. 56.5 behind a 150 gr bullet in 270 is running 2950 fps and case head expansion is about the same as 4831 at the same velocity.
