Kind of a long story.. . . . A few months ago, I decided to get rid of a few 'safe queens'. So, to figure out what kind of prices I could ask, I started looking at auction sites. Uh Oh! I ALWAYS get in trouble looking at gun auctions. The reason I decided to sell a few was to get another 25-06. I had one, really liked it, but I loaned it to a friend, and he liked it so much he made me an offer I couldn't refuse for it. Anyway, I looked at a bunch of different rifles, made some low bids on a few. Then I fell in love with a Browning B78 single shot in 25-06- almost new, with great wood, 26 inch octagon barrel. I picked it up today. Sound familiar, Bill and D-D? ;D This weekend I'll mount a scope on it, and make up some loads. Then it's off to the range to see how she shoots. I'm happy! ;D ;D ;D

Jack if i had found myself in a similar situation with cash in hand i would have one too. love those browning single shots. i got to think a hex barrel with nice wood for the stock has to make that a good looking gun.

Good luck with your new gun. I kind of like single shots too. They may make you shoot better as subconsciously you know you only have one shot.

Congrats Jack. Your going to love that gun. Only complaint I ever had with the one I had was it was just too pretty to shoot. Especially when I had a number of other guns I could shoot that I didn't care if they got a ding or two. I had a bunch of Winchester gray box 120 grain ammo and tried the one I had out with it and at 300 yds it was very boring to try to hit a 12" gong. You had to work to miss it. Now if I could of found a set of synthetic stocks to put on it and leave the wood to home I would still own the one I had. Well maybe not, I needed a camper shell for the pickup bad and it provided the vehicle to get one. At least it went to a happy home.

I can understand the 'too pretty to shoot'. Really, really nice wood on this one - but it will get used. I have a weakness for single shots and good wood- the combination was too tempting. I've used a Ruger #1 for quite a few years now, which has some nice wood, but not as fancy as this Browning. I should say too, that I had a number of messages back and forth with Bill regarding prices, etc. Thanks for your help, Bill.

A real nice gun as I had one in 45-70 and agan sold it because it was too nice to take out hunting. The 25-06 is ok it's ALMOST as good as a 270 and should be good on prairie dogs and coyotes to a couple hundred yards, but for deer and such you really need a 338 mag or better yet a 333 OKH.... Sorry I just re read some of Elmers stuff and...

;D Twomoons! Yup, a good pest rifle, by Elmer's standards. Fortunately, I don't hunt those bulletproof Missouri deer. ;D

Thanks to you guy's it is one my bucket list of ten items. The only ones i see for sale are 45-70's.
The bl-22 has been purchased so I can put another on the bucket list. Thanks to dovehunter it might be the palomino 22 or a 9622 ruger.
I like the looks of the b78 much better than the ruger #1.

An update: I finally got the time to go to the range with the new (to me) B78. Mostly out of curiosity, I tried 2 powders I haven't worked with before: Accurate Arms Magpro, and Hodgdon's Hybrid 100V. I shot a few 3 shots groups with various charges of each powder, using the Nosler 110 Accubond bullet. I got a few decent groups, and some ideas on what loads to fine tune. Best group was .6 inches. I didn't chronograph any of these loads- when I get closer to a final load, I'll run them over the chrono.

To hot here right now to play much... I like the sound of the 110 gr bullet. I stick w/ 100gr unless I'm Elk hunting then it's 120 gr. Nosler partitions.

Thanks, Twomoons- I was encouraged. Another group (3 shot) had 2 holes overlapping, and one well out, and I think I pulled the flyer, so, I wanna check that load again.
