welll if you all recall i had a crack in the stock of that side lock i bought this past fall. well i had an offer from a guy to fix it for me and for free. i finaly took him up on it since i have not had time to get it out and shoot it anyway. he sent me a email the other day after he received it and he was pleased and impressed with the overall stock quality and condition. so now he is going to fix the craxk, completely strip and refinish the stock and rebuff and seal all the brass too. anyway i told him he could do what ever he wanted and by all means i'm in no hurry. now to be honest i don't know the guy at all and i might very well end up getting back a stock in worse condition than it was before i shipped it off. i'll post the results in a month or so when i get it back. by the way he's not taking anything for doing this but i will come up with something for his troubles and good faith.

If I was to guess the finish was probably nothing too spectacular anyway...
The new finish might be a bit darker.

The new finish might be a bit darker. i can just about garantee the new finish will be darker. he ask if he could use what he refered to as french red stain then hand rub coats of linseed oil. i have 125.00 into this gun i figured what do i have to loose? (the obvious answer is 125.00 .....DUH!)

Brownell's says that stain looks like a pre-64 model 70 finish. Here's a link to one of those www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=154674098#PICI can tell you you're not going to recognize the gun; it's going to be that different. It will be interesting to see how the brass looks on it as I think brass looks better with lighter wood.

that brass will look fantastic against something of that color or tone.

here is my stock, with the crack glued up and all sanded down. there has been one coat of paste wood filler with french red stain applied to fill the pores. this is it after that staining, no oil finsh or sealer applied yet.

Did he age that brass or is it a play on the flash?

drink a cup of coffee and look again you knucklehead, there's no brass on it at the moment, it is just the stock after the chip was glued and the stain and wood filler aplied and wiped off. then tomorrow i think he'll start with the linseed oil.
