I actually researched that as well To do it right (meaning not walking through the woods looking stupid), it's going to cost a considerable amount for the guide/lodging, gas, and tag(s). We're looking at 3000 dollars when its all said and done unless we want to spend 2000 for something the size of a german shepard in TN/SC. www.nmtrophyhunts.com/bear.htm (Mick Chapel in New Mexico) www.pbguideservice.com/index.html (Suppost to be the best place in Maine and I think the price is pretty reasonable) www.bouldercreekoutfitters.com/BCO_ssm/pricing_guide.php (probably the best in Idaho. It's been featured on hunting shows. My dad has a few personal friends that have hunted with great success on bear there)

I know some guys who go to Maine about every year, about 100% success.
I also know some guys who did good in Ontario on a couple trips, but that was a few years back.

Leave WI off the bear hunting list even though we have a very large bear population. It takes 7-9 years of submitting applications to get enough preference points to get a kill tag. GRRR.

Antelope hunting is a relatively easy hunt physically with a high success rate.

XP and I have been talking a bit about this. Success is usually 100% even on public land provided the weather is ok. You have to walk 1/2 mile to a mile off the road to find them though once the shooting starts. Private land is usually cheap and would allow for a ground blind sitting over the water hole.
The negative: I think we have some timing issues as the season interferes with Bullseye's yearly plan. As of right now, I'm going to WY on a seperate party to antalope hunt so I wouldn't be able to go either (unless that fell through).

There is always the coyote hunt. Cheap, Public land, Long season Almost everyone has a varmint rigs and a couple of mouth calls.
Hogs in the south, I like pig.
With my current finances, close and cheap are somewhat a requirement. Would be willing to do about anything within reason.

I hear you Jim
Personal finances are going to be important and I think we've put out some ideas that are cheap and is worth everyone's time. The more people that can go, the greater chance that it will be cheaper for a variety of reasons.
Gas is probably the most expensive aspect of the hunt. If we're not taking the kitchen sink with us, some people may be able to split the bill on the cross country trip if a member is on the way. You might be able to take a buddy who can split the bill with you. These are things everyone is going to have to work out. Naturally not everyone is going to have that luxury but...
And lodging can be brought down as well if we stay in hotels. I think I've mentioned here before on the of the threads that you can fit at least 2 people in a hotel room and probably 3 with a rollout bed / sleeping bag, couch. Or people can camp. Again, I think a large group is better because a group can stay in a hotel and a group can camp. If it's a small group, you really don't want to be the only the one camping (or the only one in a hotel). But with a large enough group, I think we could split up the accomodations in a more economical and social way.
It's going to take some cooperation to drive the cost down for as many people as possible. But I am confident we can do it without incident.

Camping here will be made easier cause 2M's and I can sit up our camp ahead of time. I think we can sleep 2-3 people each if you have to be out of the weather, plus 3-4 each under the lean-to's if you don't mind a canvas roofed room. Thats 5-7 people w/o any tents being put up. Plus we have all the cookery items so you don't have to pack alot of gear cross country. Basically hunting gear and bedding.

Unfortunatly, we had a few employement and health issues (especially the health issues that hit Bubba and myself at the last minute). I was thinking the other day that we might start this up again probably for 2010 as it's getting late in the year. Of course in the next year now I don't know about my job because I think I'm on borrowed time. I don't know if turkey is still an option It seemed to be the best thing going last year as a fairly central located, low cost hunt compared to other options hunt.
