Sturgeon season is open here and this upcomming weekend will be my first opportunity to get out this year! We generally fish after dark with heavy rods and line that is a minimum of 20# test. I use 50. Big hooks crammed full of nightcrawlers and a cooler of drinks. The minimum length limit for a keeper is 70" and one fish may be kept for the duration of the month long season. Last year I couldn't stick a keeper but had a BLAST with the little ones up to about 50". It is amazing how strong these things are! Last week a local lady did catch a keeper though the fishing is only getting started and will improve as the weather cools!

Pardon my ignorance, but, do you eat them? And, if so, how are they?

I think people in Missouri try to snag them along with paddlefish on the mississippi and missouri rivers.
I think they're trashfish jack but not sure.

red, the sturgeon is a protected fish in missouri if i'm not mistaken. so if ya where to snag it you better release it. right up there with the aligator snapping turtle, in illinois you can catch em, here in missouri though they are protected. i'll check the regs. and let you know of i'm full of it on the sturgeon.

Guys sturgeon are very good eating!!! Like a paddlefish they have no actual bones. The roe is also quite valuable and a successful angler can make a pretty good chunk of change selling it. I hope to be able to post some pics soon.

Jim, It's a nice white fish. fairly firm and mild tasting. If I can catch a keeper maybe we can sample it this fall as a snack between fields. I was planning to smoke some of it!

But Donnie, don't the cigarette papers get wet when you roll the fish up in them. Really makes them hard to light that way I would think.

I know little about sturgeon. They look to me like they're armor plated, or is that just certain varieties? Isn't this the fish that Russians value so highly for their caviar? It's expensive stuff to buy I know that! I've seen some pictures. Boy do those rascals get big. Best wishes.

When I was a boy my grandfather would sometimes take me & my two brothers fishing at Niobrara on the river. Often we would see large sturgeon roting on the shore that at that time peaple would catch and just throw away, and when we caught them grampa would do the same and said they are no good for eating. Now I know diferant, but still have never eaten one but tolled they are some of the very best of eating and easy to get two good fillays from each one if you know how? I was tolled but do not remeber how anymore. cooked with or diped in melted butter is right up their with the best so they say that know!!
