I really, really, really hate public land hunting. Do you know how many trucks were on 7000 acres (only 2000 woods and by woods I mean mainly thick brush you can't put a stand on anyway)? Almost 50 trucks for a September deer hunt - over a month before people really start deer hunting. I was hunting a 10 acre patch of woods that I didn't even know if it was public or private due to a bunch of conservation signs that said "end of public use area" (map showed it was ours though). One would think that would deter others, no...there was 4 people hunting on 10 acres and the other guys had their heads up their asses - including talking in the woods, cell phone ringing, and getting down out of the tree and clanking stands at 730am. I saw two deer in 14 hours of hunting - while in comparison I have spooked 14 deer in one hour of scouting a few weeks ago... One deer got right up to me and spooked - perhaps it was because I went to town that afternoon and visited the cat house. I'm standing in the parking lot ready to go hunting and I'm spraying scent eliminator all over me (even though the directions said don't). So I end up going to the woods smelling like cheap perfume and I'm totally covered in a rash from that scent spray...but I really didn't care... The other deer trotted within spitting distance from me but the only problem was blood was pumping out of her because one of those jacks cut me off from my left 60 yards away. I need private land again - where deer can be stupid and I can be left alone...

You just need to find better public land.
I can't imagine it's not there. You need to find the places that are hard to get to. The easy places have all the people. I hunt almost exclusively public land and have very little trouble.
I feel for you bro.

The problem is ANY decent public land is going to have A LOT of people on it. The top 2/3's of the state are the best hunting - but also within two hours of 3 out of 4 of the most populated cities. Any public land in the top 2/3 of the state has a boat load of hunters on it. Doesn't matter if you take a boat on a lake, hunt 50 yards from the truck, or hunt 1 mile from the truck - there are so many roads and access points.
That leaves the bottom 1/3 of the state - where the deer population in each county is in the single digits. I mean, if you hit a deer on the highway - deer season's over; don't bother hunting...all killed out... The national forests are down in this area. You literally have hundreds of thousands of acres to hunt on, but it's all worthless unless you live down there...
It's known that you might see one deer all season and you better capitalize.

red which tract of land did ya hit? Exit 127 in Columbia. Go a mile north - it's on the left hand side - the red house with the wood fence across from the MFA. Oh, you mean hunting. Reform (the calloway county nucular (sp) plant) You know, I thought "I hope I didn't give that poor girl poison ivy". And she probably thought "I hope I didn't give that poor boy ********, *****************, **********, and *******.

Sure jim, whatever you say...
Missouri. Columbia is the most liberal part of the state. The cops try to bust the two asian massage parlors every so often. They don't worry about Lynn's just because the owners and girls are American. Also I think Lynn's does a great job in the fact they do not create trouble for themselves by using the right language. By the time they get down business, the police would have blown their legal case long before that.
Just don't go in during the morning or afternoon - don't have many working there. I thought I might of had to find a sheep (or possibly a dead archery kill deer) again because the first two girls were either black or 6'2'' and 40. Then all of a sudden I catch glimpse of this dishwater blonde, age 25, 5'6'' 130 from California. She was like "oh great the redneck in boots is going to pick me...I hope I don't get poison ivy lol".
Hit it up Jim 80-160 bucks. Just figure out a better way than me to get the purfume off...

To try to get this thread back on track...
I simply do not believe that ALL the public land is full of people. It seem like that here in Indiana too, till you do your research to find places that there are not a lot of people. It may take a couple years to work it out... but I can almost guarantee that it's there... somewhere.
Most people barely get a map... they drive around and find a place to hunt. Then keep hunting the same spot forever. You got to do a lot more leg work.

Plus I notice you are complaining about thick brush where you can;t put a stand anyway... THAT'S where the deer are Red. The places that all the other lazy SOB's don;t want to screw with. The deer go where they don't get harassed. That means the thickest, nastiest, sttepest places furthest from the road or trail. If you find it... they will be there. Hunting on public land ain't easy, but it's possibe. I have posted pics of some of the public land bucks we've killed, plus I kill as many does as I can stand most years. 3-6 usually.

Jabba, I agree - there are places you can go. I know of a few that requires a boat as it sits in the middle of the mississippi river. I am going to check out a place that got totally destroyed by the 1993 "Great Flood" next week.
The problem with the dense underbrush I am refering to on this piece of land is twofold 1. Everything is green still - makes it impossible to shoot through now 2. Let's say in the fall you can shoot down into it - there are very few trees that are decent candidates. What I'm talking about is a narrow (20 - 50 yard) strip separating two fields. This is also assuming that people won't be screwing off all around you...but yeah, you can try to go all the way back.
I agree, there are so many deer being held in there.

Red; If Bounce taught me one thing over the years it was : "You don't hunt just the deer alone dummy; watch the other hunters and let them move the deer to you!!!" That's Bounce's take on it, and I got'a admit it works. On public land find the escape routes, not the fast running ones the does and young bucks take, the ones the big bucks sneak out on. Then show us the pictures of the buck. Good Luck Red.
